This literature-analogy analysis
of the Republican Party in the US since/with Trump in light of yesterday's
Alabama Senate election strikes me as on target.
Re yesterday's
Alabama results -- yes, there is a hopeful/encouraging indication for
those of us who are shocked, embarrassed, frightened, and more by the
Trump-emboldened demonstrations of how widespread and deep the religious
and/or political fundamentalist cancer actually is throughout/within the
American population. However, we must not overlook the reality that Alabama
voters would have decisively elected virtually any other Republican candidate
who could have given them even slight ease of conscience re basic dignity and
decency -- e.g., certainly a Mike Pence sort, a Ted Cruz sort, a Mitch
McConnell sort, et al. After all, the contested Senate seat was Jeff
Sessions' long-time Senate seat! So, after a bit of celebrating, we must
all continue acting/advocating for peace and justice as we navigate our
daily encounters. The social cancer remains widespread and
deep. But the number who are alarmed to the point of
serious self-examination and courageous alignment with those at risk seems
to be growing.
