Fragment -- #194

[December 2001 journal entry]

Why study history? --

  1. to acquire important mental habits,
  2. to promote peaceful resolutions to conflicts,
  3. to promote respect and, therefore, ‘community’,
  4. to learn indirectly by considering the experience of others,
  5. to address causes rather than symptoms,
  6. to promote humility,
  7. to avoid the repetition of errors and tragedies in the past.
